What do interns learn when they start at Indietopia? Week 1
- On 19 June 2023
Twice a year, a new group of interns (usually max. five students) start working with us. Project manager Kris receives many applications, from which he selects interns based on the projects we have lined up. It is important that they have complementing skills, so they can each work at specific tasks. They can also learn from eachother while working on a project.
Working with Unreal and Blender is the main focus. Each intern starts by following a set of tutorials, which we gladly share:
Unreal Editor Fundamentals – Editor Introduction
Unreal Editor Fundamentals – Actors and Blueprints
After these fundamentals they download Unreal 4.27.2 and check 50 Unreal Engine Tips.

Having these basics in line, they turn to Blender:
3D Furniture Rendering
Substance Painter: Materials and Masking
Hard-surface Modeling
Non-destructive Modeling Techniques
Models aren’t that complicated with this approach!
Interior Lighting Basics
Lighting a Night-time Exterior
Materials – Understanding the Production Workflow

Then it is time to work with Blueprints:
Blueprint Essential Concepts
Blueprint Kickstart
Outdoor Lighting Tutorial

Following these tutorials takes about a week. We will post the second series of assignments next week.
